Believed to be the first high-quality steel ever made by humankind, Wootz is an ancient supermaterial that was used to forge some of the finest blades in history. Before firearms, modern militaries, and industrial warfare, blades were the weapon of choice. In a contest of swordsmen, possessing a blade that would not break was akin to wielding a superweapon. This technology was so crucial that Saladin himself raised and garrisoned forts to guard the mines where Wootz ore was once extracted.

Blades made from Wootz steel were not only incredibly sharp and tough but also visually striking, with intricate patterns of silver and black rippling across their polished surfaces. Whispers of these “jewel blades” grew into a legend. Their mechanical toughness and ability to hold a keen edge surpassed all Western materials, while the mesmerizing patterns added an air of mystery that endures today under the name Damascus steel.

If you have ever heard of Damascus steel, then you are already familiar with the concept of Wootz steel. Today, Damascus blades are widely available online, featuring the same beautiful patterns found in the ancient supermaterial. However, what is fashionable today is merely an imitation of true Wootz Damascus steel. Modern pattern-welded steel is created by repeatedly forging and folding metal to achieve a similar aesthetic.

True Wootz steel, on the other hand, was one of the earliest known examples of crucible steel. Unlike pattern-welded steel, it was never folded or quenched; instead, it was processed in a fully liquid state. While other steels contained impurities and slag, leading to brittle and inferior blades, Wootz — being a true crucible steel — boasted a much cleaner microstructure and significantly higher performance.

It is believed that the secrets of this material were lost around 150 years ago, sometime after crucible steel was rediscovered at an industrial scale in the mid-18th century.

So, how does this relate to Wootz’ Vantium™ Aligned Carbon Nanotubes? Just as Wootz steel was purified and processed in its liquid state for superior performance, we take the time to purify our raw CNTs and process them in the liquid state — resulting in a material that outperforms the alternatives. It’s that simple.

Wootz is an advanced material solutions company that aims to answer the demand of the future with next-gen carbon antennas and sensors. From RFID tags to radar systems for aerospace, Wootz is jumpstarting the future with a material that connects, conducts, and electrifies like nothing before. Our next-gen carbon material, Vantium, redefines performance by augmenting and replacing metals with a green alternative. Vantium boasts an unparalleled combination of high-performance properties that sets it apart from any other known material.
